One of the epic failed days — Yamaha Sniper 135 Classic

One of the epic failed days

Sometimes we tend to think that we had the fastest bike while riding happily on our own well tuned and modified moped/underbone , cruising at a satisfied solo hi-speed on an open hi-way ( the force of the wind on our faces and the big smile on our cheeks reaching our ears as the speedometer needle rises up more) not til some 5 bastards with their superbikes did a 2OO+km/h flyby on you...... (that would really wipe the smile outta your face or simply just speechless with an awe) :-p

Ok need help fast 85 xv700 just had carbs redone give her gas runs like a banshee Idle surging and dies My Haynes manual is worthless on this Just says take to yamaha shop What is the correct idle air/fuel adjustment on this? The baseline i can tweak it in from there thanks

    %d comments
    • Set them both to three turns fires right up NOW if set idle to 1500rpm idles fine UNTIL you give it gas then idles settles back down at about 3k dial the idle back down and it dies frustrating SOB this is

    • 4 simple steps to fix this.

      1 take off your carbs

      2 buy sledge hammer

3 beat the crap out of it until you fill better

4 cry because now you don't have carbs.

    • 5, I sell you new carbs lml

    My 1993 XV750 — Yamaha Virago XV 750

    My 1993 XV750,

I got her about 4 years ago (paid £600 as she was a bit of a skip (wreck)). Over the years I've replaced the carbs, tyres, brakes, crappy yamaha silencer (now has HH slash pipes) front mudguard (rotted), rear mudguard (chipped and holed), fitted engine bars etc, and spent a damn long time cleaning and repairing her. Outstanding jobs are need replacement fuel tank (has a big dent in the otherside).

I had an 1986 version that I sold, but this one is by far the best.

The first two years she had a nasty electrical problem, that would cause her to stop after 4~5miles, replaced carbs (just in case), pickup coil, coils, and it turned out to be the damn side switch,,, ARGHHHH.

    • Thanks

    • Thanks to Gumtree I got the last part I needed. This was my tank (no I never did that), I used to park that side of the bike against walls etc, just so people couldn't see it, lol.

    • Now today for the first time I can take a picture of the otherside. Taken 3 years to find a tank that was identical to mine.

    • It sound better live than on video. It's loud but not annoying or unbearable and gets this really nice growl at around 80+.. but I do get some backfire when shifting or letting off the throttle sometimes not always. It will have to do for me for now, seat and back rest set me back a chunk and the alternatives are pricey

    • I like the looks of it an as far as you description goes it sounds like my bike too which though loud I love it lol

    • yea mine has been doing that already . They ship bikes lean as it is so might be running too lean with this setup i have . Not going to do intake till i figure out what controller will work best . Lol cop already pulled up next to me and smiled and waved finger and i did not crack it lol . It is over 92 db

    • I'm having the V&H setup installed today. I'll let ya know how it works. Right now I have the V&H competition exhaust with stock intake and no fuel control and shes real poppy.

    • The RPM has a mid freq. sweep, and a mid boost or cut, which works really good for the "attitude tone". When used with the precision p-up it gives you a lot of choices for tone. And again they are really good D.I.............for me anyway. :)

    • Yeah, the zoom's sansamp model had an added mid control but unfortunately set at the wrong the wrong frequency IMO at around 400hz, hence the parametric to boost 1k - the sweet spot.

The standard sansamp natural midscoop sound tho is pretty much perfect for the woofer pickup.

So a while ago I realized I had to do something with the stock bars because after a long ride. I had a persistent pain on my shoulder and upper back. A lot of people told me to get ape hangers but I don't think that's too practical on windy days. So I loosen up the bars and I brought them closer to me (which also lowered the handles). Having my arms in a lower position feels more natural and I feel I have better control. It also helps me keep my back straight.

Another thing I also did to Rosie. I replaced the rear wheel bearings because I felt a slight vibration so she also rides a lot smoother

      • Bore helps, definitely. But all the power is in the heads with these engines. A proper cam, decking, valve job, p&p, ect. really wake the engine up! Pair that with a bigger better carb and a proper intake and exhaust and your set! Also, I think buying an outright kit is a waste, do some research and make your own "kit" by using the parts you'll be happy with. Build it, don't buy it.

      • Yeah. I hear ya on that. I bought the kit. Came with a JE piston and a hot cams stage 1. Full fmf exhaust and a big bear cdi igniter. I working on getting a better carb for the riding condition I'm in.

      • Yep, its all about getting the most efficient combination of port velocity and volume then mating a cam to match well with that and your static compression. You've got a great mild set up now though.

Took out the headlight braces and windscreen for painting. Now I'm not sure if I want them back on.

I think the dog looks more agressive and classic without them.

A couple of self made small braces should keep things tight. Problem is how to hide the cabling and make the speedometer "weatherproof".

My 5th FJ, back around 2002. Some millionaire graphic designer in K.C. did it as an art project and had it tuned, toned and tricked in every way. Ran as good as it looked. I think I paid $5G's, and he wasn't negotiating. Drove from Chicago to Kansas City to get it. It was well worth it. Riding this bike for a couple of years was like riding Angelina Jolie for a couple of years, back when she was hot. But just like with Billy Bob Thornton, this bike got stolen from the wrong side of the tracks in North Tulsa. I got her back, but she'd been beaten up pretty bad, and though I fixed her up, she was never quite the same.

And though she's gone, me and Billy Bob can both say, "Oh, the memories"...

        • WD wont dry rubber seals, it wont make the rubber swell, it wont do any harm, it displaces water and also a works as a llube on things that are stuck,,or a cleaner to remove gr ease and grime, I wouldnt use it to lube a chain though. best with proper grease or chain lube... ..

        • Oh my mistake, I think I was confusing wd40 with perpetrating oil. But, still wd40 will clean off the existing heavier lubricant leaving the chain essentially dry.

Hit the start button heard a click and all lights faded. Do I have a battey issue or something else? I am new to this world of bikes so any help would be appreciated.

        • Charge the battery OFF the bike. When fully charged, let it sit a full day and check the voltage. Also,Two simple places to check are the big cables to the battery -Check for resistance by connecting a Voltmeter between the + battery post and the starter bolt. When you crank it, IF you see any voltage ion the meter, it means your cable is corroded. Same test with the - cable by connecting Voltmeter between - post on battery and a GOOD contact on the frame. Any voltage showing on the meter during crank indicates corroded cable causing increased resistance.

        • Voltage drop is the best way to check for corrosion on cable. I've found the anything under .5 volts is good. Another thing to check for is a draw in the electrical system. If you disconnect a battery terminal and put a meter between the battery and the cable you should have no voltage reading. Great advice Mike Miller!

        • Here is the battery I ordered. Cant say enough great things about this battery. I did a lot of research and this was the best price I found. sYTX24HL-BS.html#reviewsAnchor

        • The OEM key has a magnet slot directly next to the largest protrusion of the of the hexagon, whereas the wholesalecarkey has magnet slots arranged otherwise. See pics below. I should have noted this before purchasing :/

        • I haven't tried stuffing the wholesalecarkey with magnets and just seeing what happens, but this is why I'm pretty sure it wont work. Although my OEM key hexagon head is rather worn from being in pockets, it still seems the wholesalecarkey hexagonal head is rather different as well.

        • I should also note that in playing around with the magnets, the OEM key magnets DO vary the polarity, as well as the position. I have magnets in the 12, 6, and 9 positions (relative to the protrusion). The 12 and 9 magnets are similar polarity, while the 6 magnet is opposite. The 3 slot seems empty. Anyway, just thought I'd mention it for those trying to have a fully functional replacement key

        • Sounds like jetting problems. Could be timing also. Jetting is changed due to amount of oil also. Think like tim mentioned too much oils leans it out. Gas is what cools the engine also.

        • Are you running a Wiseco piston? if so, need to drill holes in the piston on the exhaust side as instructions mention.

        • Try Running premium fuel. Also richen your needle and main jet a bit if you can.

Does anyone use a boost pedal/overdrive in the distortion loop of the EBS Sheehan drive? Curious as to the results! Shifting around a lot of gear at the moment and I think one of the EBS pedals is on the cards, but to my ears it doesn't quite drive enough! Thanks! Also: playing my Attitude non stop these days. Much happier back in the land of 4 string attitudes ;)

          • I tried a Jemini od/dist by Ibanez, in the drive loop, before the ebs, and after the ebs. It colored the heck out of the tone. My solution....... another EBS after the first one. First one set medium overdrive tone with on /off switch in dirt.loop. ( for clean tones using phaser and envelope filter) output of ebs 1 going into input of ebs 2 set for heavy overdrive sustain.

          • As you know Adam, I'm simple in all meanings of the word. I don't even use the boost pedal/boost channel on my GK MB 500, never mind any other pedals. And that pedal came with the amp, lol. I will reply to your question on BC, there is something I need to try at tonight's gig to answer a query from another BC'er. So, a full reply to all questions tomorrow, both posted and pm'd.

          • IME Mike the Hartke Bass Attack pedal tends to scoop the mids a little too much for my taste, and the eq is voiced such that you can't dial it back in.

I sometimes use one depending on the gig to add a little tube like warmth/grit but I wouldn't consider one for overdrive.

I'm currently eyeing up the DHA VT1 and VT2 range for getting more proper tube tone out of a pedal along with flexable tone control.

Alright I got to ask what brakes does everyone use. I got ebc they lasted like 3 weeks so I then started using a sintered heavy duty they last like 6 weeks the rotors are good just wondering if there's something better.

            • EBC severe duty. And it sound to me like you use your brakes to much, what dun is that?

            • Only time I use the backs is down coal hills n 2 stop quick. I use my fronts more

            • I use the yamaha stock ones they last for ever

Suggestions on a lower/sleeker rear fender without doing too much cutting on the frame, I'd like the option to put a small pad for my lady to ride occasionally, she's only about 105lbs lol. Something similar to this. (credit to the owner of this bike, not trying to steal your shine brother).

            • I think I will Nick Pearson and Craig Genau, I was against it but it's growing on me fast!

            • Man, you get used to it real quick. Its not bad as people tell you. Most that tell you it sucks, have only ridden on one once or twice. I rode a hard tail from Houston Texas to Watkins Glen NY and back. Altogether, 4,099 miles in 8 days. I'd hard tail my Harley but the shock mounts couldn't handle the stress. One day, I'll be on a hard tail again.

            • I love it! I wouldn't go back unless my back gives out lol

            • Sorry for the delay......way past my bedtime last night :-)

Can't wait for pics, that's a nice color scheme. Hey you're in Montreal, pm or friend me if you want to ride one day. I'm gonna try and get a gang of FZ6R riders together......or at least a gang if riders :-)

            • How much did it cost to do this? Not to much?

            • not much at all.......I think the most expensive part was the 7" round headlight....I paid like $90 off ebay.....all in all I would say i spent not more than $300...maybe $400

But You Didn t See Me — YAMAHA PICS MODIFICATIONS

            But, You Didn't See Me

            I saw you,

hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line.

            But, you didn't see me,

put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday.

            I saw you,

pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk.

            But, you didn't see me,

playing Santa at the local mall.

            I saw you,

change your mind about going into the restaurant.

            But, you didn't see me,

attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief.

            I saw you,

roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by.

            But, you didn't see me,

driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window.

            I saw you,

frown at me when I smiled at your children.

            But, you didn't see me,

when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless.

            I saw you,

            stare at my long hair.

            But, you didn't see me,

and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love.

            I saw you,

roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves.

            But, you didn't see me,

and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none.

            I saw you,

look in fright at my tattoos.

            But, you didn't see me,

cry as my children where born and have their name written over and in my heart.

            I saw you,

change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere.

            But, you didn't see me,

going home to be with my family.

            I saw you,

complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be.

            But, you didn't see me,

when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane.

            I saw you,

yelling at your kids in the car.

            But, you didn't see me,

pat my child's hands, knowing he was safe behind me.

            I saw you,

reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road.

            But, you didn't see me,

squeeze my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn.

            I saw you,

race down the road in the rain.

            But, you didn't see me,

get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date.

            I saw you,

run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time.

            But, you didn't see me,

Does anyone have a transponder I can borrow for the weekend Mine has decided... — Yamaha Past Masters Racing Forum

Does anyone have a transponder I can borrow for the weekend? Mine has decided to die even though it charged fine a month ago and my backup plan of borrowing my brothers seems iffy as his has done the same!

Bemsee have run out of hire ones too.

            • I had similar problem with mine Kev prior to Brands. I ended up hiring one from Bemsee. My fault as I didnt charge it regularly over winter. It would keep flashing red in the charger for 3 to 4 days and then light would go green. However after removing from the charger it didnt give any green flashes. I left it on charge over the brands weekend and the little devil was fully charged with 4 green flashes on my return from brands!!..worth while leaving on charge....

            • ok thanks fellas, mine actually turns green after 30 hours, but when removed from the cradle its dead. Harvey in the 400's is gonna look at it for me as he can repair them.

            • charlottes did the same just leave it on for a few days
