Had a scare yesterday when I forgot the rarity of filling stations in Texas and ended up doing far too many miles (36.5) with the low fuel flashing. Just out of interest what's the highest mileage their FJR has done in low fuel mode? Being near an oil well would have made it doubly embarrassing if it had conked out!

Ive added alot of stuff to my fjr. Wanted it to be mine and personalized it — YAMAHA FJR FJR1300 Performance

Ive added alot of stuff to my fjr. Wanted it to be mine and personalized it. A fairly long list of off the shelf parts as well as some custom one off stuff. Lets hear what you have done to personalize your bike to fit your personal taste. Offer up ideas to others.

Seth laam seat, helibar top triple clamps and one inch tall risers along with a custom 1 inch x 2 1/4 custom made pull back riser, 3 in longer hel brakeline. Shad trunk with 4 point mounting plate mounted along with a custom made support frame for the trunk to stop cracks in sub frame, an additional ajustable mounting plate to set trunk back further. Custom made upper and lower trunk pads. And a lower accy pouch, grab on grip covers. Kicker ipod amp and 100 watt piggy back amp. 3 in cycle sound speakers with custom made master cyl and clutch master cyl mounts. Taller windshield. Front mc canyon engine guards with long horn kuryakyn highway pegs. Rear t rex bag guards and rear kuryakyn floor boards and adapters. And a tech mount for my gps. I think thats about it. Not much more to add i can think i might want.

Long day getting this spacer/riser plate set up all the holes counter sunk. The 3 in longer brake line on and system bled. Drilled and tapped the mounting bolts to accept the 4mm bolt for cover plates. And drilled a new hole and alignment pilot to mount my tech plate for my gps. ended up having to add 4 inches of wire to the left handlebar side. It would of fit. But i just didnt like it. Just seemed a little more snug than i liked. So added new wire soldered it all in place and put heat shrink on all connections. The put a heat shrink sleeve over the whole harness and sealed it up. End result looks and feels great. Hopefully we will get out on a test ride this week should weather permit

Dont like leaning on my hands for long periods. Ive already added the helibar top clamp which sets bars back. And added a 1 inch riser. Still not where i want them. So ordered a 3/4 in aluminum plate. And going to make an aditional set back riser. That i can set the bars where i want them. Plate should be here today. So will start drawing up a pattern and cutting it out setting it all up then drilling and tapping it then sand and finish. Will see if i can get them where i want them. My new 3 in longer brake line came in yesterday.

Hi everyone. This message isn't totally directed to FJR owners but more so to Yamaha as a brand and I want you to weigh in on the matter. In the last two years (In my area) One Yamaha dealership completely closed and the new independent dealership to pick up Yamaha has dropped the motorcycle division just with in a few months. I spent some time chatting with the store employee who stated that the business practices from Yamaha are stricter then other manufacture to sell bikes. So the independent owner didn't want to buy the Yamaha tools to work on the bike, and completely reface the store to look Yamaha. My question is, is anyone else seeing this? Is Yamaha trying to bump the independents out of the way and make for corporate dealers? Thanks

Been cutting out my subframe support not alot to work with. Going to pull the subframe off next then weld it up at our shop. Will bolt down in 6 places under the shad 4 point mount. Made from square tube and angle iron. Seems to be about all i can do. With the support resting on the frame tightly along with bolts to keep it secure and not being able to come loose. Prob wont get it finished till mon with ice storm coming on. Will see

Got the shad 50 trunk on. The bracket spacers seemed a little long for me so i substituted them with 1/2 in shorter spacers. Much cleaner look. Added the touring windshield as well. Awaiting a call from laam seats to set up what we want. Seats already sent to him. Looking into installing pivot pegz on the bike as well. They dont make a set for it but found some close in size that seemed doable. Have the heli bar triple clamp installed along with 1 inch risers. Ordered a top color plate for the trunk today and a lower optional lower lumbar pad for the shad trunk as well.

Notice several fjrs with a passenger backrest. Looked for one that i might find for my wife. Very few out there. Decided id just design and build one from stainless. And use the yamaha raider pad. Figured id might as well make it adjustable for her as well. Drew up my patterns sent it over to a friend to have him waterjet iit out for me. Should see it back after the first. Then i can shape it and cut it to length. Drill and tap it. Then sand and polish it. Aluminums easier to work with but stainless is so much nicer.

Put ignition key in today and immobiliser light still flashing and engine not start. Tried spare key and even the red key, still no luck. Rang dealer who I got bike from suggested take battery off overnight and put on charge. Have done this and will try again tomorrow, but have feeling will make no difference. Anyone else had this problem and any suggestions. The bike is a 2010 FJR. Cheers

Well heli bar top triple clamp a success. Came in today and i cleaned it up and got it installed. Took about three hours to remove the factory one. Due to tbe snapped off tamper proof bolts which were lock tighted in. Wtf was that all about. New ones installed. It moved my bars back over an inch. And seemed to twist them out just a little. What a difference. 94 bucks and a quality piece. Even came with two ram ball mounts. My 1 in tall spacers should be here friday and ill get em mounted on. So for tbe record 2nd gen clamps will fit 3rd gen bikes. Bolted right on to my 2015. Positive note. Your steering lock still works. But you have to put 3/8 spacers with longer bolts in between ignition switch and clamp. Where the ignition switch just comes about even with top clamp where it comes through.

New owner here. Well soon to be. Looking for any information on the 2015 fjrs. Thinking my first purchase should be risers with more pull back. But seeing very little out there that isnt full upper clamp set up. Also curious on the best seats out there. Liking the russel daylong seat. Wondering how they set, as well as hear they are taller. Any info on riders with drivers backrest. Ordered a trunk as well. Wouldnt mind knowing if there is a better pad for the wife. Trying to make it as comfortable as i can for both. Any tips on set up for passenger nd driver as well.

I have a question relating to FJR1300A gearbox, in fact just 2nd gear has anyone out there had to rebuild your bikes gearbox due to dog teeth worn and skips in and out of 2nd gear under load if so are the replacment gears modified to avoid this from happening again or can I have the dog and cog machined and rehardened?

I'm three days away from purchasing my new FJR 1300 ES. I have to fly 450 kilometres south of my home town to pick it up and drive it back. All highway. I know there is a break in period. Is there any suggestions as to where I should keep the rpm's at or what speed I should maintain on the highway during the break in period?

Hey all. Quick question. I’m not a FJR owner yet but wanting to join the ranks very soon. There aren’t a lot of used ones where I am (unless they are older and on the higher mileage side) so new is the way I’m going. There are a lot of 2016 ES’s still on the show room floors but no ‘non-current’ years around. However… I did see one advertised a few hours away for about $5,000 less. It is a new “2014 FJR E” (I’m assuming ES) so my question is, other than the 6 speed, are there any differences between the 2014 and 2016 years that justifies the $5,000 difference if one has the choice between the two years? Thanks for your input.

I have a question folks. I've been having an issue with my 05 sometimes sputtering and stubbling during acceleration and at idle. It runs smooth most of the time, and it eventually corrects itself if I get on the throttle. Sometimes during the stubbling and sputtering there is a slight odor of gasoline. I bought the bike from a used bike dealer last July. It came with the two brothers mufflers, already installed, and an installed power commander III unit. The bike has approximately 26,000 miles on it now. I'm thinking it might be time to have a throttle body sync done, as well as a plug change. Any thoughts?

It has over 120,000 km on it, has put lots of smiles on my face and has NEVER let me down! Unfortunately, I had knee surgery and can no longer tolerate the sportsbike seating position :-( .... so after bashing HD for the last 35 years I now own one LOL ... Hey ... Life's journey is full of twists and turns .... never say never I guess ... this new ride allows me to stretch my legs and keep on riding ... after all isn't that the goal? It's been fun sharing pics of these awesome bikes with you guys ... take care, keep the shiny side up and live to ride another day! :-)

Quick question guys. I've a 2007 FJR1300 AS (us ES) and I fitted a new Power commander V and Autotune.

I'm having problems when install was complete and bike started it was running very lumpy, took for a quick run and it has now a misfire and running on/off cylinders.

Took back and although I had not installed any other maps I then downloaded and installed 3 different maps and they are all the same. The bike runs that poor with the power commander until I get a resolve I've returned to stock and bike is running perfect again.

Has anyone fitted one and have you had any problems or suggestions on how it should be sorted. I know some will say why I wanted it. But I've had on all my previous bikes and just like them generally. Better throttle response and control, and better fuel mileage.

Thanks you in advance for any suggestions, I'm currently thinking of sending unit back to power commander to be checked as I'm convinced their is a fault in the control unit.

I found some LED ones, BUT not sure if they are the ones that are constantly on (running), then get brighter as you apply the brakes. There's nothing on the ebay or amazon sites that indicate whether it's the replacement for a dual filament type bulb. Can anyone comment, or have any suggestions please?

Hello all my FJR friends and enthusiast. I'm on a slow recovery. Thank you all for thoughts and prayer it is greatly appreciated. I was told I am cancer free as far as tumor removal. Had a meeting with heart therapy today. Told the therapist all I need is to twist the grip on any of my bikes and it would speed up rehab. There are six in the shop. Yamaha's 13 FJR & 82 XV750 Virago - MotoGuzzi's 09 Griso 8V 1200 & 74 Eldorado 850 - BMW's 82 R100RS & 72 R75/5. They are all uniquely different. Funny when I finally made it out in the shop just yesterday evening to bring in an electric heater my wife couldn't locate. I reached over the fuel tank on the covered FJR and gave her an affectionate hug. My wife said what's that all about? You know how you have a love for horses. Will I miss riding this horse especially! She has done everything I have asked of her she is reliable and dependable friend. The GRISO is like a totally wild torque filled beast with all the mod's I have performed. The old short wheel base R75/5 is gentle very agile light weight tour. Couple days ago I watched this video aboard the old Toaster recorded this last summer riding though the basically uninhabited Menominee Reservation. German sewing machine! You all know what an FJR is like to ride so take ride with me? http://youtu.be/uArICvuXBG0

A Yamaha service tech advised against using synthetic because of the potential for issues related to the head and valves. I changed to Amsoil 10w40 at my 4,000 mile change. Now at 4,750 miles, I'm wondering if I should change to a regular petroleum based oil.

Attention all FJR riders: Get the crappy stock seat fixed!

This is all done by a great company who specializes in aircraft interiors; especially seats; who also does motorcycle seats. This is a little known secret, but they are awesome. I brought in my front and rear seat from my 2014 FJR1300A and they did an incredible job (They only redo the seats on the stock pans).

They have some kind of special aircraft foam that turns seats into major comfort zones. They basically removed one inch off the top of my stock seat foam and added their special comfort foam. I asked them to also lower the back half of the front seat by one and one half inch, so it would end up one half inch lower than stock so I wouldn’t be falling forward anymore. It turned out very good. Very soft and comfortable for the long run. My wife loves the rear seat now. No discomfort whatsoever!

Excellent prices. Fast service. I paid $100 for each seat. I asked them to reuse the same seat covers, but they do offer upgraded custom made seat covers for an additional charge. I just wanted my same seat cover.

They are located in Houston Texas so you can ship it to them. They do require the price quoted and the return shipping to be paid up front. They will let you know what their schedule is, but they did mine in a couple of days. Highly recommend. I would show you pictures, but mine looks just like stock – just not when you sit on them.

Had a CT Scan today feeling like crap since the inject iodine did not agree with me it was time to take a ride. Balmy 58 degrees. Drove down to Hatley, WI on the way back when I pulled out from a stop sign onto HWY 45 the rear of bike became lose & squirrelly. No air in the rear tire will do this upon twisting the grip with 160hp. Hehehehe! Turn on the 4 ways. As an AMA member I simply called the American Motorcycle Asso. for Roadside Assistance. From my cell call they had me on GPS and sent the local Shell Dealers tow truck. This Shell is where I purchase all my bike fuel, awesome! They were only 12 miles away. It was a nail which pulled out of the thread while leaning left to accelerate. All of a sudden it was like driving on ice!

After my last 3200 mile trip, trying desperately to buy any possible padding to make it the last couple of hundred miles on my stock seat, I have taken the plunge and purchased a Sargent World Sport Performance Plus Seat for my 2014 FJR1300A.

I have ridden twice since I received it, including a straight hour and a half traveling at high speed on the interstate.

The first ride, the seat felt kind of funny. It seemed to have too high of padding right up under the backs of my legs and it didn't feel right. Immediately upon returning from that ride, my wife wanted to know how it was (because she hoped throwing another $400 at my bike would finally make me happy) and I told her it was much better, but I wasn't sure yet. I did determine that it made me sit lower in the seat and I changed it from the low position to the high position, which ended up putting me about where I was with the stock seat in the low position and my leg bend seemed to be somewhat less.

On the second longer ride last night, I started to get it. It made me think about those weird toilet seats you run into once in awhile where they are ergonomically fitted to your butt. They feel funny, but apparently place you in the exact right position for the job at hand. As I rode, I was able to feel the seat was much more like a saddle than a seat. Underneath the vinyl fabric, is hidden a classic tractor shaped seat. This time around, the padding underneath the backs of my legs, became form fitting cups for my butt cheeks and I found it to be very comfortable. Also the center rise part of the saddle ended at the perfect place, leaving my junk to have free roam (float) in front of the rise without anything pressing on them. I would call it an ergonomic saddle which holds me in place with no pressure points.

It is a delicate proposition to give an accurate description of how a seat fits your butt, but I thought it was worthy of describing for the sake of any other people who are trying to make a good decision. $400 is a lot of money for most people, including me.

Owning an FJR sparked me into creating this FB page. With the FJR arguably the top sport touring bike made today I thought how about going back to the root of all sport touring motorcycles the original a BMW R100RS? So I bought one. The first generation of RS (1977) as an Airhead model is a special bike. The FJR is not even compare able to an RS in a wind tunnel. Cross winds are barely noticed on a RS. Very light weight & positively stealthy. Good hard bag storage plus two storage compartments under the seat. Cycle World in 1982 RS test displayed a top speed of 135mph.

Like so many other FJR owners, I decided to remove the air injection system on my bike. It makes syncing the throttles so much easier without all those hoses in the way! I have however noticed a down side to that decision, my engine runs hotter in traffic & low speeds. I theorize it's the oxygen sensors reading less oxygen in my exhaust & signalling the fuel control unit to lean the mix a bit at lower throttle openings. I have a couple other things to climb under that tank for soon (like another sync job) so I am going to replace the PAIR & see what happens. I'll keep you posted.

Finished yeaterday with a 975 mile ride from Roosevelt, Ut back home. Many highlights, but I would suggest to anyone to enter Canada through the East Port entry through Idaho and hit hiway 3A and any/ all of the roads in and around the 3 free lake car ferries like the Kootenay Bay ferrie and the Needles ferrie, the roads and lakes are awesome, couple that with hiway 12 out of Missoula, Mt up and over Lolo Pass and that would be a great trip in itself. FJR is incredible, handling and power on demand! I will say however that I will need to replace the OE seat before the next excursion.

While riding on Beartooth Pass and the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway I felt my (already cupping) front tire slip a couple of times, once almost put me on the ground - not sure how I stayed up.

I have ordered a set of Michelin Pilot Road 4 GTs and will have them installed in a couple of weeks. I'm hoping they will last longer. The reviews I have read seem to imply that they will.

The FJR aluminum parameter frame creates a box wrapped around the engine. I was low-sided feet not able to reach the pavement during an emergency stop entering a parking lot. A car coming at a high rate of speed out of the lot cutting me off. Time to replace plastic fairing parts "and" install T-Rex Sliders. Image of task in progress. Know a bit more about my FJR than had ever planned. 3.5 hours and $600.00 later. These images are rather rare of the FJR frame with a fairing body part removed. There are images of naked frames and naked of seats etc.,. Try Google-ing FJR aluminum parameter frame?

Big part of the fascination with Motorcycling is closely related to this.

When you take a seat on a bike, you get into a similar situation. You sit on a machine that has more power than you could ever need. You know that whenever you need more power you have it. The feeling of having control of this kind of power is indescribable. At the same time you know that you have to be 100% focused, as one distraction can lead to your demise. Offensive drive puts the driver in something similar to trance. The memory in our genes from the time we were animals helps to keep the mind focused. Rest of the world becomes insignificant. You are here and now in a strangely concrete way. You feel a bit more living for the moment.

It’s said that happiness can’t be bought but if you buy a Yama 1300FJR you are extremely close to it.

I just signed up for my first ever track day in April. I will be riding my FJR and using this as a test to see if regular track days are for me (and if they are I will be buying a literbike for the track). I would like to solicit some advice from people who know.

Question 1: I will have to replace my radiator fluid with water for the event. Is this something that can be done in the pit paddock or do I need to do this in advance?

Question 2: I currently have PR4s front and back. Are these suitable for this event or should I buy and swap tires out (I have a tire changing machine at home, so I could get some Pilot Powers for this event), or perhaps should i leave the front Pr$ and swap out the rear?

Question 3: What tools should I bring for the event?

Question 4: Were there any revalations you had after going to track day? Anything that you figured out to make your experience easier and more pleasurable (or anything that you learned NOT to do)?

Thanks for helping steer me in the right direction,

I currently ride a Honda VTX1800n and I'm in the market for something less heavy and more sporty and good for touring. I have ruled out the new goldwings and BMW's because I'm not going to pay 20k+. That leaves the Yamaha FJR and the Kawasaki Concours. Both bikes are good so please don't comment just to bash a particular bike. I'm sure a lot of members tried the Kawasaki Concours before selecting the FJR. What were your deciding factors? Pro's and Con's welcome if they are constructive. Thanks in advance.

Recently, I ride Kawasaki Vn2000 limited and and I love this machine but after few 600 mile a day runs started to look for sport touring bike. Basically, I am set on FJR1300 but , I will not kid you, I also like Kawa Concourse 14. Is there any specific generation of FJR I should avoid due to mechanical issues ( was thinking 2009-2011) or should I skip used bikes and get new one? Another question - how many of you guys went from big cruiser to Yamaha and what are your opinion about that switch?

Scissor style is the best from a stability standpoint. Harbor Freight style like lift tables are fine for limited use home tables. A FJR is no light weight. Absolutely don't trust the poor at best front tire chocks most come with and even the good ones are not to be trusted. I added straps to my table on a out rigger pipe and eye bolts to spread the angle to outside the handle bar ends. Without the out wide rigged cross through table pipe the straps rubbed the side of the bike fairing.

Being new to the FJR and coming from a GL1800, I'm still getting used to the sitting position. My biggest problem is my left thumb. The pad area hurts as does the large thumb knuckle down towards the wrist.

I don't feel like I'm grabbing the handle too tightly. I also notice when I'm breaking, I can feel my weight going forward and this in turn aggravates my thumb. I try to grab the tank with my legs to help with that situation.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!

The standard hold down eyelets are much to narrow for motorcycles with a fairing. Easier to attach to handle bar ends. For a widening of lift table hold downs use 1" pipe through holes on the sides of table. The straps need to be outside the table width to eliminate rubbing on the sides of the fairing. This simple modification I made is with a 36" piece of black pipe and two threaded eye-bolts and a hairpins on each side to stop pipe sliding. This is a 2013 Yamaha FJR Sport Touring bike which is greatly narrower than a Honda Gold Wing. Gold Wing would utilize a 48" pipe or longer.

Never heard so much constant noise n the smell of poorly combusted fuel? Bikes going by with radios so loud they could be heard a couple blocks away yet just loud enough for driver n rider to hear it over the extremely loud exhaust. Can anyone realate to ear plugs & gas mask??? Parked the Yamaha FJR1300 for all to see wishing they had one too! NOT. They wouldn't know what to do with the power at hand. LOL
